Other familiar languages that Google offers for homepage are Italian, Spanish and Japanese. Languages that are'nt so familiar to me are Basque and Occitan.

Keola Donaghy, a professor at Ka Haka Ula O Keelikolani College of Hawaiian Language at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, spent more than 100 hours converting strands of text on Googles homepage into Hawaiian as a volunteer translator. Google has 125 foreign languages for it's homepage and depends on volunteers in part to translate.

Donaghy faced a few challenges when he was translating, because many modern web words have no equivalent in the Hawaiian language. Words like for example "download" and terms like "www" World Wide Web, and also "URL"
"Uniform Resource Locator". Donaghy brainstormed and creatively figured out substitute words.

The Hawaiian word KELE-translated to English means sail/sailing. He was to become a priest that will be long remembered for his legacy and devotion. During his life he had spent time with some of the last remaining patients of the Hansens disease settlement in Kalaupapa Molokai, this was how he spent his days volunteering to minister to the sick.

This mission that he was sent out to do was just the makings for a priest who would become Hawaii's first saint. Two worlds would come together for the canonization of Father Damien.

Born in 1840, the seventh of eight children, he gave up the farmers lifestyle for the priesthood. He left Belgium for Hawaii as a missionary, he was only supposed to be on a 3 month rotation with other "Sacred Hearts priests", but he had asked to stay and was granted permission to. He lived in Kalaupapa, Molokai for 16 years tending to the sick and helping to create a community.

In 1866, more then 2000 Hansens disease patients in the Hawaiian Islands were ordered to leave their families and sent to the isolated peninsula of Kalaupapa. Exiled and forgotten they were shipped to their new home, upon their arrival to Kalaupapa, they were thrown off board to swim their way onto shore. And forgotten about, torn from their lives to start new lives.

In 1885 Father Damien had been diagnosed with Hansens disease, and died 4 years later. In 1969 the state lifted the travel restrictions for these patients. Today, only 19 Hansens disease patients who were subject to restrictions are still living and reside in Kalaupapa by choice. By 1940 most of the exiled patients had passed on.

Father Damien will be canonized with 4 others on October 11,2009 in
Saint Peters Square, before an estimated crowd of 50,000 people. About 600 Hawaii residents have seats to the event. The people of Belgium are fascinated by Father Damiens sacrifice, more them a century ago when he volunteered to minister in Kalaupapa.

A Tribute to Father Damien, "May He Forever Rest in Peace."

Mahalo,
Deb Mills

Real World Magazine

Recently while I was spending some time on the internet, paying my Twitter account a visit and tweeting the day away, I ran across an interesting article. It read "OPEN CALL"...immediately I needed to investigate what this open call was all about. When I did take a look I was pleasantly surprised to see that the open call was referring to the start of a new magazine titled- "Real World Magazine"

They were publishing a first edition and looking for people who are from Hawaii willing to write an article. How cool could that be? actually, it is very cool. Participants would have to write an original article, a first hand experience on "A View On Hawaii Life" or "Life In Hawaii" something that will inspire the reader to want to live their best life.

It is an intimate look into your life, sharing about what I love to write about, Hawaii. The magazine would also require you to sign a waiver to give the magazine permission to publish your article. I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time, prior to this I really did'nt think I was quite ready to adopt a project that would give it's participant instant recognition.

Real World Magazine's first issue should already be out for sale as of September 20th.

Other submittal requirements are:
A cover page with your
name-
address-
phone number-
and the #(number) of words or lines and the format/style of your article.

Submit your article to:
submit@realworldmagazine.com

They will hold any submission for up to 1 year.

I may just have to try my hand it. Imagine the exposure this would give someone like me!...I'll keep you posted.

Mahalo,
Deb~

How Google Wave could transform journalism

How Google Wave could transform journalism

Posted using ShareThis

Deb Mills - "HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU HUN!" I've been really getting excited about learning all that I possibly can about writing a blog, not just a blog...but a blog that I can be proud of. I want it to be a variation of inspiration, helpful and informative. And to also have a certain quality of being personably mine. I expect the unexpected occasionally and for that reason, have tried to keep a positive attitude about becoming a beginner in the world of blogging. I now have an outlet to be me, and with time, research, and practice my "Midlife Impressions" blog will be my thoughts and views of my home in Hawaii and the world that I live in.

Mahalo,
Deb Mills (c)-2010

Get Blogging.......

Aloha Everyone,

I have been wanting to implement a blog for some time now but I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to say (blog). I just never really knew enough to feel confident about publishing my words. Well, now today I can say that I do feel much more confident, in knowing that as long as I keep a positive self-image of how I want others to perceive me, and to also be honest, straight forward, and with good intention I should be alright. So for anyone who thinks that it cannot be done, let me tell you that IT CAN!......

With my thoughts all over the subject, let me make a few suggestions that were quite helpful for myself with getting started...

1. Preparation is ultimately half the battle so before anything else know what you want to say, and say it.

2. Think of your blog as your own personal journal.

3. Express how you feel about something that is o important to you, or an idea you may have and want to share.

4. Write a short story and add pictures to help the reader grasp what the story is in referrence to.

5. Research your topic so you can have current or updated information to share with your readers. Dont forget to give credit to others if you have borrowed part of the post by addind links.

6. Write footnotes to remember important details about your article that you want to include. Footnotes will give you the accuracy element, and your article some character.

7. Be confident in yourself....you have gotten this far, now "Go All The Way."

8. With every entry you will start to become more familiar with your style and even develop a characteristic that most bloggers display (exclusively you)

9. It is a lesson in self discovery and personal development. And please remember to have fun with it!

10. Now your a blogger!

There are many websites and communities that you can become a member of and that will help you to seek out other like-minded bloggers like you.
This has been my: "Midlife Impression" for today!

Creatively Me,
Deb Mills- (c) 2010
